Architecture firm Snohetta has designed Europe's very first underwater restaurant at the southernmost point of the Norwegian coastline by the village of Baly. The restaurant will be partly submerged in the sea to give diner a glimpse below the waves.
Under is the name of the restaurant that holds a double meaning, in Norwegian, "under" can be trasnlated into "wonder". "More than an aquarium, the structure will become a part of its marine environment, coming to rest directly on the sea bed five meters below the water's surface" said Snøhetta.
A huge frame-like oak wall will provide the building's entrance, which will lead through to a wood-lined restaurant space. Evironmental considerations have guided the design, shich is housed in a coarse concrete shell ro invite mussels to cling on. Outside of opening hours, the unit will double as a marine biology research center, with planned experiments to study the behavior of marine life through shifting seasons.
